Questions in the copy....

30/3/2016

Putting questions into the content of the copy seems to make a difference. It is not conclusive yet but adding questions then resolving them seems to help people align with the content.

It is not exactly Socratic in process but it does seem to give people the opportunity to participate more. A number of authors of material related to copy-writing for websites also suggest this as a good way to do things. The idea is not new and those writing stories and advertisements have used this approach for years.

It is good to know that tried and true processes work though and we do not need to completely reinvent things just because the delivery media is different. However, remember this is just an opinion and based on simple observations. In developing or working on a site you need to be experimenting all the time and seeing what people respond to.

A lot of energy goes into layout and design, which are important, but remember it is content that will keep peoples interest and get them returning for more. Good luck with it.

It would be great to hear how you have approached the question of content when developing your web presence. Please just leave a comment below.

As we said, we will try to keep you updated about how this piece of research is going.  What we are seeing is that traffic is certainly busier where there are regular changes and updates.

Some of you may be going "Well, that's a no brainer," Yes, but as we play with this and make changes we are also seeing what resonates most with those accessing the sites and making contact with us. This information helps create a direct link between what we see in other research and our own world. Sometimes you have to make it a little more personal and just check out what others are saying.

Thanks to all of you who have assisted our learning so far and we will continue to keep you posted.

Web Experiment

4/11/2015

As the name suggests we are doing a piece of research. We are using active websites to see what creates better engagement with stakeholders, via the web.

The reason is that recently, at a governance level with some of the organisations we work with, there has been a lot of discussion about website value. Good discussion, people are trying to understand what return there is for the investment they make in having and building a website, or ideally a web presence.

Some of these organisations have put a lot of money into the design and maintenance of their sites. However, often they are frustrated at the lack of added value the site has given them. They feel they have built beautiful sites and the people should come. Often they have not.

Part of the discussion also involves entrepreneurs who are boot strapping a concept. They are looking at how to get their idea promoted through the web with as little cost as possible. Their aim is to get quick traction. They have been receiving all  sorts of advice from web professionals about the importance of looking good, and having the right image. But, they are struggling to see the return from this investment.

In support of clarifying this slightly we have undertaken this experiment on behalf of those we work with. To do this we have two websites running. This site is the control. Other than basic content and information the site has no additional content. Marketing for this site is largely through traditional means, business cards, e-mail footers etc…

The other site, which you can reach at this address [www.claritytolead.com] will have blogs and possibly vogs added on a regular basis. In addition it will link to other sites with relevant content.

Both sites are currently set up on openly available free platforms. The intention is to find out what makes a difference and what seems to bring people to either site.

As we proceed we will keep you posted about what we see. The site analytics are helping us to understand what is happening.

We are not looking to get all the answers, just to find out a little more so we can provide insight to those we are working with. Ideally we will gain a better understanding of how they can reach out to and build stronger networks for themselves.

Your comments and insights will be invaluable with this. So please add a comment below or on the other site. Tell us about what you believe makes a website worth visiting, what you look for and how you think organisations should use the web to keep their constituents and followers informed.
