As the name suggests we are doing a piece of research. We are using active websites to see what creates better engagement with stakeholders, via the web.
The reason is that recently, at a governance level with some of the organisations we work with, there has been a lot of discussion about website value. Good discussion, people are trying to understand what return there is for the investment they make in having and building a website, or ideally a web presence.
Some of these organisations have put a lot of money into the design and maintenance of their sites. However, often they are frustrated at the lack of added value the site has given them. They feel they have built beautiful sites and the people should come. Often they have not.
Part of the discussion also involves entrepreneurs who are boot strapping a concept. They are looking at how to get their idea promoted through the web with as little cost as possible. Their aim is to get quick traction. They have been receiving all sorts of advice from web professionals about the importance of looking good, and having the right image. But, they are struggling to see the return from this investment.
In support of clarifying this slightly we have undertaken this experiment on behalf of those we work with. To do this we have two websites running. This site is the control. Other than basic content and information the site has no additional content. Marketing for this site is largely through traditional means, business cards, e-mail footers etc…
The other site, which you can reach at this address [www.claritytolead.com] will have blogs and possibly vogs added on a regular basis. In addition it will link to other sites with relevant content.
Both sites are currently set up on openly available free platforms. The intention is to find out what makes a difference and what seems to bring people to either site.
As we proceed we will keep you posted about what we see. The site analytics are helping us to understand what is happening.
We are not looking to get all the answers, just to find out a little more so we can provide insight to those we are working with. Ideally we will gain a better understanding of how they can reach out to and build stronger networks for themselves.
Your comments and insights will be invaluable with this. So please add a comment below or on the other site. Tell us about what you believe makes a website worth visiting, what you look for and how you think organisations should use the web to keep their constituents and followers informed.
